Bases, Rings, Accessories
SCOPE BASES:
The Savage 10ML-II AccuTrigger accepts two pcs. of the Weaver "Grand Slam" steel bases (#S46), available from Brownells-- their part # 955-000-026. Alternatively, Warne Maxima steel bases, part # M902, are also available from Brownells. The Brownells part # is 947-629-020. They appear to be identical; the Weaver Grand Slam bases are a bit less expensive. This current production 10ML-II has a round receiver, and takes the same base front and rear. The Warne bases are also available in a silver finish, please see Brownells as well for these.
Call Brownells at 1-800-741-0015.
SCOPE RINGS:
Warne Maxima series steel rings. The "Quick Detach" 1" tube, matte finish, medium height rings are Brownells part # 947-623-100. They work extremely well with Weaver Grand Slam bases (or the Warne)-- and accomodate most scopes inclusive of a 44mm objective. Brownells also has stainless rings available if you prefer.
ABOUT BARREL LAPPING:
According to Henry Ball and such
high-end custom barrel markers as Dan Lilja of Lilja Precison Rifle Barrels,
home barrel lapping is generally to be avoided-- and needlessly reduces
barrel life. As far as I would go, would be the "J-B Bore Paste" treatment
(BROWNELLS). A very mild abrasive, it is more of a thorough cleaner than anything
else. It will make your Henry Ball Limited Edition easier to load with some
sabots.
SUGGESTED BREECHPLUG LUBE:
" Never-Seez" NSBT-16, or Mil-Spec #907E rated equivalent (avail. at any major auto parts store)-- for both the breech plug and vent liner. "More is More." Bostik "Blue Moly" remains the best product I've found thus far.
SUGGESTED BORE CLEANERS:
Hoppe's #9 for the barrel (and breechplug), Breakfree CLP remains the preferred barrel and metal protectant. Breakfree also does a quick job on nitro powder residue, as well. A thorough breechplug cleaning (and possibly vent-liner replacement) with Hoppe's or brake cleaner is in order after about 100 shots or so with the powders cited to maintain accuracy. It is easy to track; just mark a 100 pc. Federal 209A primer box with "Henry Ball" on the packages. When your primers are gone, service the breech plug and clean the vent liner. It's just THAT easy, for many (most?) shooters-- it is a once a year event.
For me, it is just clean the 10ML-II after a pound of Accurate Arms 5744. No other muzzleloader made today can tolerate cleaning only after the burning of a pound of its recommended propellant. For those who would rather shoot than clean-- the Savage has no equal.
CLEANING YOUR BREECHPLUG:
After burning through a pound of 5744, or 100 primers-- use a 5/32" drill bit to quickly drill out the carbon from the primer side. This carbon is left by 209 primer compound residue, not the powder. This is just a 30 second job. Drill all the way through; the drill bit is self-guiding. Clean the ventliner as well, if necessary. Install the vent-liner, coating its threads with Mil-Spec 907E automotive anti-seize before doing so. Now you are good to go for another pound of 5744, or 100 shots enjoying "new gun" performance for as long as you own your 10ML-II. The "every 100 primer" maintenance method is super-easy to keep track of, especially if you elect to use different powder charge weights.
FAVORITE SCOPES:
By nature subjective, favorite choices include the Burris Signature Select 3- 10 x 40mm Ballistic Plex, the Sightron SII 3 x 12 x 42 and the Bushnell Elite 3200 3 - 10 x 40. All these scopes have more internal adjustment than most scopes on the market, are brighter to my eyes than Leupold Vari-X III's at dusk, and hold their zero without fail. More info on Sightron product can be found at http://www.sightron.com . The Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10 x 40 features a tough, titanium alloy tube and has the "Bushnell RainGuard" that is the greatest innovation for hunting scopes in years. More info is at http://www.bushnell.com . You can read a few thoughts on various scopes here: http://www.chuckhawks.com/muzzleloading_scopes_price.htm . As far as I'm concerned, you really can't go wrong with anything in the Sightron SII line, or the Bushnell Elite 3200 line. All three scopes have given great service, and are great hunting scopes on any rifle-- including the Savage 10ML-II. The Burris Signature Select 3-10 x 40mm Ballistic Plex is the pick of the litter, see http://www.burrisoptics.com .
CLEANING / BULLET SEATING JAG::
The tool that handles it all is the "Spinjag." There is nothing more useful, better-made, or adaptable to more bullet nose profiles than the .50 caliber Spinjag. See http://www.spinjag.com for more information.
