With 300 gr.
saboted projectiles (Barnes Original SSSP # 457010 available
from Barnes) and Orange MMP .458 / 50 sabots (available from
MMP) there isn't much better. Thanks for the heads-up, Jeannie!
Vihtavuori
N120 has been the subject of many articles here and elsewhere. In
the course of testing many, many combinations over the years I found
N120 to be a shockingly good, standout performer in the 10ML-II
with 300 grain sabots. The .458 / 50 MMP sabot gives a larger launching
pad for the bullet than its smaller counterparts, and is the most
consistently good sabot on the market-- and the strongest. N120
has only one negative over the years, that being its two pound packaging
and perceived availability. I'm delighted that the 1-pound containers
are now out there, and also delighted that Jeannie and the folks
at Kaltron-Pettibone have long been supportive of the 10ML-II and
use of their propellants in it.
The three Savage
Arms recommended powders, N110 (now also available in 1 lb. containers),
SR4759, and Accurate Arms 5744 endure as superior propellants.
The advantage
of N120 is that it has what I've found to be the ideal relative
burning rate with 300 gr. saboted projectiles, giving extremely
good velocity with accuracy. The "window" in the Savage
10ML-II is 55 - 62 grains by weight of N120, I use 57 grains most
often. That nets you a bit under 2300 fps, with 60 grains as close
to 2300 fps "on the nose" as can be hoped for.
The velocity
champ with 250 grain sabots is N110 using the loads suggested by
Savage Arms; for 300 grain sabots N120 shines. The better sectional
density of 300 grain bullets coupled with the easy-on-the-sabot
N120 gives a high performance hunting load in the Savage 10ML-II
that has yet to be equaled in the muzzleloading industry.
I'm delighted
that N120 is finally getting the attention it deserves.
